In astrology, the sun sign is the zodiac sign through which the Sun passes at the time of your birth. Sun signs symbolize the seat of our conscious ego and serves as the center of our identity around which all the other planets in the astrology chart revolve.

The sun takes 365 days to travel (so to speak) around the entire zodiac, spending roughly 30 days in each astrological sign. Contrary to what many might assume however, the zodiac dates used in western astrology are not based on the actual positions of zodiac constellations as they currently are in the sky.

Over the many years since modern astrology was established, the constellations have gradually shifted in relation to Earth’s orbit due to precession. This means that the alignment of the constellations with our calendar year and seasons is drifting further and further apart.

Western astrology ignores this however, because it is based on the tropical system which uses the dates of the earth’s seasonal equinox and solstice points rather than the relative constellation positions used in the sidereal system. In Vedic astrology, the sidereal system is used instead of the tropical.

For this reason, your Vedic sun sign may differ from the one in western astrology. The astrology on this site however is based only on western astrology and the tropical system.
