10 Bizarre Standards of Beauty From Around the World

Published by:

[dropcap]W[/dropcap]estern standards of beauty clearly have the most influence and prestige around the world. Aspects like leaness, well-proportioned bone structure, healthy hair, and physical fitness are some of the features coveted in western culture. The pinnacles of beauty are often personified in Hollywood’s leading actors and actresses, haute couture fashion models, and even certain high profile athletes. In other parts of the world however, there are other standards of beauty that exist that would seem bizarre or unthinkable to westerners. Here are 10 ideas of beauty valued in certain parts of the world.

1.Crooked teeth – Japan

In the west, people pay good money to have their teeth straightened. In Japan however, many Japanese pay hundreds to undergo surgical procedures to have their teeth made crooked. The look is known as “yaeba” and is meant to resemble the awkward teeth of young girls whose chompers haven’t fully developed yet. Yaeba features teeth that look crowded with vampire-like elongations of the canines. It is said that Japanese men find the yaeba smile attractive because it makes women look impish and endearingly child-like. Women inspired by national pop stars and celebrities flock to have the cosmetic dental procedure done which involves attaching permanent or non-permanent adhesive fang caps to their canines. “Yaeba” literally means ‘multilayered’ or ‘double’ tooth. Physicians have admitted that some clients return to have their procedure reversed, however. Fortunately the removable-type of “tsuke-yaeba” is also available so that clients don’t have to live with their decision should they change their minds later.

2. Lip Plates – Southern Ethiopia

In the Mursi tribe of southern Ehiopia, women are encouraged to wear lip plates which are wooden discs inserted into a gaping hole cut into their lower lip that is expanded gradually over time. The Mursi women often begin this process around the age of 15 or 16 whereby their mother or some other appointed woman cuts a slit in the lower lip which is held open with a wooden plug until the wound heals. Over a period of months to years the plugs are replaced with larger plugs until the desired size is reached. Some have stretched their lips to hold discs of 12 centimeters or more. It appears that the Mursi females are not coerced into doing this but choose to of their own volition sometimes under the influence of peer pressure. The lip plate is supposedly a measure of a woman’s bridewealth however, some reports have claimed the lip piercing may be a remnant of a custom meant as a deterent to make the Mursi women less attractive to slave traders in the past. Others happily marry without having pierced their lips or wait till after they’ve had children to do so.

3. Elongated neck – Burma

In Burma, a long giraffe neck is a thing of beauty. The Kayan women of eastern Burma wear weighted brass coils that compress the muscles around their collarbones pushing them down into their ribs to make their necks appear longer. More and more rings are added over time and a full set can weigh up to 10 kilos. Although the rings can be removed, most women tend not to due to discomfort and skin discoloration. Also because having worn them so long, the rings feel like a part of their body and they’ve expressed feeling vulnerable and naked when not wearing them. Possible reasons as to why this practice originated may have been as protection against tiger bites or to deter slave traders from taking the women as slaves. The women that continue to wear neck rings have cited doing so to preserve and uphold the beauty of their culture and possibly support their local economy by attracting tourism.

4. Fat Farms – Mauritania and Samoa

Even in western culture, a curvy, buxom figure is well appreciated but in Mauritania this ideal is taken to a greater extreme. Mauritania, a north African country twice the size of Texas, has suffered ongoing problems particularly in the form of food shortages and chronic poverty. It is little wonder then, why plumpness would be valued as a symbol of status and prestige. In 2009, Mint Ely, head of the Association of Women Heads of Households stated in an article “In Mauritania, a woman’s size indicates the amount of space she occupies in her husband’s heart”.Women in Mauritania are encouraged to fatten up and parents often force their daughters to gorge on pounded millet, camel’s milk and prunes. They are punished if they resist and if they vomit, they are forced to eat their puke. The practice is said to have originated in pre-colonial times where wealthy white moors expected their wives to sit all day while black servants tended to household duties. The men wanted their wives to emulate those of the prophet muhammad and poetry has been written in praise of stretch marks.

5. scarification – Ethiopia

In the Surma tribe of Ethiopia’s Omo valley, men and women adorn themselves with body art in the form of keloid scar designs. The practice also serves as a test of strength and maturity for young women to signal their suitability for motherhood and childbearing. The ceremony involves the use of razor blades and thorns. The skin is pulled using the thorn and then slit with the blade, afterwards agitating the wound and filling it with plant juices, and charcoal to enhance the scars formation. The intricate scar patterns are seen as beautiful and more preferable to that of their natural smooth skin which they consider to be ‘ugly’. During the 10 minute ritual, those who undergo it do their best to maintain a stoic face and not to show pain or fear so as not to bring shame on their families. Tribe members have received ridicule from urban Ethiopians who view them as primitives. Many try to conceal the markings of their tribe to avoid negative stigmas against them when among the modern Ethiopian population.

6. Face Tattoos – New Zealand Maori Tribe

The Maori are a Polynesian tribe in New Zealand. The Maori decorate their bodies with intricate tattoos as a mark of adulthood and achievement. They do it also to accentuate their features and beautify themselves to attract romantic partners. It is a custom that has been carried on for centuries and was observed by the earliest European settlers and missionaries who were both fascinated and appalled by the Maori’s ink covered skin. The men may receive tattoos that cover much of their face and throat like a mask. The Maori women are restricted to more moderate decoration and have been known to favor tattoo designs on their chin purportedly because it draws attention to the eyes and lips. The process of applying ink is also a test of strength because the method used by the Maori is particularly painful, more so than modern methods. They use sharp scalpels to scrape and carve into the skin to inlay ink beneath the skin to create a work of art that will remain permanently.

7. Surgical bandages – Iran

In Iran, cosmetic surgery is popular among young women seeking to enhance their physical attractiveness. According to some figures, up to 40,000 cosmetic procedures are done in Iran each year. In particular, nose jobs are a popular procedure and now even the wearing of nose bandages following a surgical procedure has become fashionable. Women proudly wear them as a signal to others that there is a beautiful butterfly developing beneath their gauze-wrapped cocoon. But even with no surgery, many women will fake having had a nose job and voluntarily wear the bandages as a mere hipster-like affectation. For them, the implication of the bandages alone is almost as satisfying as actually having a nose procedure.

8. Teeth Filing – Indonesia

In Bali, sharpened teeth are considered a form of both physical and spiritual beauty. From July to August, teeth filing ceremonies take place as a rite of passage for adolescents into adulthood. It is usually done when a boy or girl reaches puberty, specifically when a girl has her first menses and when a boy’s voice starts to change. The day before the ceremony, the young adult is required to remain indoors in isolation so as to protect them from opportunistic evil spirits and such. To file the teeth, a priest carries out the task using a file, hammer and carver all of which have been purified with holy water prior to the procedure. The ceremony is typically held between 4 AM and 6 AM and when it is over, the incumbent is considered to be a mature adult. According to Balinese historical records, the teeth filing ritual has been conducted for over 2000 years.

9. Foot Binding – China

The ideal of femininity in ancient China would have been a podiatrist’s nightmare. For a long time in China, having tiny feet that could fit into footwear the size of doll shoes was considered a symbol of status and beauty. Women who had the means and money, underwent the painful process of foot binding to shape their tootsies into little deformed flippers. To achieve this look, the toes  and arch are broken and bound tightly with silk ribbons. The wrappings were removed periodically for cleaning to prevent infection. Girls were forced to walk long distances to help expedite the process of breaking down their foot bones as the bindings became progressively tighter.  After about 2 years, the process was complete resulting in a thoroughly crushed, hoof-like foot that made men go gaga. Feet that were 3 inches long were lauded as “golden lotus”, 4 inchers were “silver lotus” and a 5 inch foot was a clunky “iron lotus”. Foot binding is said to have originated some time in the 10th Century by a dancer named Yao Niang after she charmed the socks of a powerful Chinese emperor. By the 1930s, the fad thankfully fell out of vogue.

10. Red Skin and Hair – Namibia

Women in the Himba tribe of Namibia are known for their iconic red skin and hair. This is not a genetic feature but rather a result of their unusual beauty regimen. Twice a day they apply a ruddy, aromatic paste called otjze made from crushed ochre stone, fat and butter all over their skin and hair. They begin doing this as soon as they are old enough to look after themselves hygienically. The origins of the treatment is not certain but it appears to carry benefits as a sun block and insect repellent and also helps to retain moisture in the skin. Because water is scarce, Himba women cleanse themselves with herb-infused smoke which they allow to permeate their skin for minutes at a time. Women’s hair feature intricately styled braids and dreadlocks and they wear jewelry made from shells, copper and woven reed.

10 People Who Overdosed on Caffeine and Died

    Published by:

    via medical daily

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]affeine is a wondrous stimulant that lifts our mood, enhances our performance, and increases our focus and productivity. It helps get us through the mid-day doldrums. Today, energy products are more popular than ever and companies are always seeking new things to stuff caffeine into. People have many options now when seeking a caffeine buzz, but as the availability of caffeine increases, so does the potential of over-doing it. Excessive caffeine consumption has proven to be a real health concern not to be overlooked. In the past decade, we have seen a troubling trend of caffeine-related deaths. From 2005 – 2009, reported cases of caffeine overdose went up from 1,128 to 13,114. Here are 10 people who went too far to get their caffeine high.

    1. Michael Lee Bedford

    via vice news

Michael Lee Bedford was a 23 year old British man who died tragically in 2010 after swallowing two spoonfuls of anhydrous caffeine powder and chased it with an energy drink. The caffeine content of this fatal cocktail was said to amount to 70 cans of red bull. The recommended dosage for the caffeine powder was only one-sixteenth of a teaspoon. Anhydrous caffeine powder is a bitter-tasting  and highly concentrated drug. The warning label on one brand advises not to exceed 200 mg in 24  hours (which is about 1/10th of a teaspoon). Bedford obtained the powder at a party from a friend and according to witness accounts, became ill 15 minutes after ingesting it. He vomitted blood and began sweating profusely. His speech was slurred and incoherent and EMTs were promptly called to the scene. Bedford’s death serves as a cautionary tale for the importance of always reading product warning labels.

    2. Anais Fournier

    via waynesboro record herald

Anais was a 14 year old girl living in Hagerstown, Maryland. She enjoyed reading vampire novels, had a boyfriend, a twin brother and little sister. It was some time around Christmas in 2011 when Anais died after drinking two 24 ounce cannisters of monster energy drink within a 24 hour span. She drank one the night before while at the mall with friends and the other on the following afternoon while relaxing at home where she went into cardiac arrest. Doctors induced her into a coma in order to prevent swelling in her brain but six days later, Anais was declared dead. Official cause of death was “cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity.” Her mother told reporters how she had admonished her daughter about consuming energy drinks. It is believed that Anais’ tragic death was likely due to a pre-exisiting heart condition known as mitral valve prolapse. MVP is fairly common and affects 1 in 20 Americans but her doctor did not consider her to be at risk. According to the National Institute of Health, “Much of the time, MVP doesn’t cause any problems.”

    3. Logan Steiner

Just days before his Highschool graduation, Logan Steiner was found dead in his home in LaGrange, Ohio. He was  an honors student and prom king who in the days leading up to his death, was burning the candle at both ends trying to prepare for exam finals. In an effort to power himself through his academic demands, Logan turned to caffeine powder purchased from Amazon. On May 27, 2014, he was found by his brother lying unresponsive on the living room floor. The medical examiner cited the cause of death as “cardiac arrhythmia and seizure, due to acute caffeine toxicity due to excessive caffeine ingestion.” Pure caffeine powder is highly potent and it’s believed that Logan miscalculated the prescribed dosage and ingested a fatal amount. One teaspoon of powdered caffeine can contain 1,600 milligrams. As little as 10 grams of caffeine is enough to induce death, but this figure varies based on other factors such as a person’s caffeine sensitivity.

    4. Unamed Japanese Man

    via news on japan

In 2014, a twenty-something year old man in Kyushu, Japan succumbed from caffeine intoxication. He became the first known case of caffeine-related death in his country. The man worked the night shift from midnight to dawn at a 24-hour gas station. After completing his shift, it is reported that he did not go to sleep until the following afternoon. It is believed that he consumed excessive amounts of caffeine over a period of years to combat sleepiness and fatigue. On the day he died, he began vomiting and was sent to the hospital where he was declared dead. His death was ruled as accidental and not due to any other pre-existing illness or abnormality. In addition to high concentrations of caffeine and alcohol found in his blood and urine, forensics also found in his stomach traces of what was possibly caffeine pills.

    5. Dustin Hood

In 2015, 19 year old Dustin Hood perished after binging on monster drinks. According to reports, Dustin drank 3 and a half 24-ounce canisters of monster energy drink within the span of 24 hours. He consumed roughly 735 mg of caffeine which is similar to that of 7 cups of coffee. He headed to a basketball court where he later collapsed from cardiac arrhythmia. Doctors attempted to resuscitate Dustin but he was declared dead at the hospital. It’s not known if Hood had any preexisting heart condition or other malady, that could have made him more susceptible to the cardiac arrhythmia that killed him. Dustin’s father has subsequently filed a lawsuit against monster seeking unspecified damages.

    6. Cara Reynolds

    the inquisitr

Cara Reynolds was a 24 year old nurse living in the United Kingdom. Standing at 5’4″ with a size 10 physique, she was not an over-weight woman. Despite this, she desired to shed some pounds and purchased slimming pills from Amazon. She bought Forza raspberry ketones, a supplement that contained 250 mg of caffeine per serving – about as much as 4 cans of 8 oz. red bulls. Weeks after taking the pills, Cara  experienced frightening heart palpitations and told her father she would discontinue using the product for weight loss. On March 5, 2013 Cara suffered a seizure after overdosing on ketone pills, having ingested an amount of caffeine tantamount to 225 cans of red bull. She vomited until she fell unconscious and was rushed to the hospital where doctors made 44 attempts to resuscitate her. Cara eventually died from cardiovascular collapse. Cara’s recent split from her fiance is believed to have led to her fateful overdose.

    7. Honoré de Balzac

Long before there was Red Bull or Monster, coffee was the primary source of caffeine, and a drug of choice for many artists and writers. Honoré de Balzac was one such writer and an avid fan of strong black coffee consumed on an empty stomach. Balzac was a 19th Century French novelist and playwright best noted for his magnum opus La Comédie humaine. He was enamored with this dark potion and unabashedly sung it’s praises. He wrote eloquently of it’s fantastic properties and effects on him and he was rumored to have chugged up to 50 cups a day. It is believed that his coffee habit was what led to his death which according to accounts from people close to him, was preceded by profuse sweating, extreme weakness, stomach cramps, headaches, nervous twitches, and hypertension. He died August 18, 1850 at the age of 51 from heart failure due to caffeine poisoning.

    8. John Jackson

    via mirror

In May 2013, a 40 year old U.K man named John Jackson was discovered dead in his flat by his former partner. Medical examiners found that Jackson had 155mg of caffeine per liter of blood in his system. Just 10mg would have been considered an overdose. He had consumed an enormous amount of Hero energy mints purchased from a local shop prior to death. Each mint contained 80 mg of caffeine equivalent to that of an 8 oz. can of red bull. Jackson was a former painter and decorator and was reputed to have been a heavy drinker who suffered from cirrhosis of the liver. Due to the poor condition of his liver, his body would have been less able to filter toxins from the body and this could have contributed to his demise as coroners also found traces of other substances in his system.

    9. Gemma Ann Jones

Gemma was a 26 year old woman who in 2013 was found dead in her home in Wales. She died from caffeine toxicity after swallowing 100 cups of espresso worth of caffeine pills. Gemma often texted messages to her friend Martin Lloyd expressing signs of depression. On November 18, Martin drove to Gemma’s home on a gut feeling that something was wrong after Gemma failed to return any of his phone messages. He found her car parked in the driveway but she did not answer the front door. After a obtaining a key from a neighbor, Martin entered the home to find Gemma laying on her side in bed with her face down on the pillow. There was a brown residue by her mouth. Martin was instructed to perform CPR by the emergency call support but by then Gemma was already dead. Toxicology tests showed she had ingested 50 – 100 tablets of EPH. EPH is a fat burner supplement containing ephedra. 79 tablets is considered to be lethal.

    10. James Stone

James Stone was a healthy, responsible 19 year old from Wallingford Connecticut. Amid the economic downturn of the late 2000s, he was searching for work, putting in numerous applications like many others did. To fuel the intense job hunting effort, James took nearly 2 dozen No-Doz tablets within a short time span to stay awake and alert. Each tablet contained around 200 mg of caffeine and the amount he ingested was equal to roughly 48 cups of coffee. On November 27, 2006, James went to the bathroom and collapsed from a heart attack. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Connecticut deemed the heart attack to have been brought on by “caffeine toxicity”. Since James’ death, his parents have sought to have better warning labels featured on caffeine products. “I’m not looking for any money or any sympathy,” James Stone Sr. said. “I just don’t think it’s right that people don’t know that this kind of thing can happen.”

The Best Phone Psychic Networks | psychics4today

    Published by:

    fortune teller

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]on’t be scammed by a fake psychic! I’ll show you where to get the best psychic readings and teach you how to avoid online scams.

Even in the high tech, scientifically advanced era we now live in, mankind’s fascination with the supernatural and the unknown continues to thrive. By all indications, religion and spirituality don’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon and if anything, seem to evolve in response to the shifting zeitgeist and intellectual advancements of society. Likewise, interest in metaphysics and ancient pseudosciences like astrology and divination also continue to exist and many people still swear by them!

Many people at some point in their lives will be tempted to dip their toes in the occult pool and seek psychic consultation either out of curiosity or desperation. There are many self-proclaimed psychics out there and thanks to the internet, getting advice from a supposed psychic is easier than ever! But are any of them legit? And how do you avoid being scammed? Here are some tips and recommendations to consider before seeking a psychic consultation.

    Things to beware of:

⊗ Beware of psychics who claim that you or your family is cursed and request more money to remove it.

⊗ A lot of personal information about people can be found on the internet nowadays. Make sure that anything a psychic tells you is not something that could easily be found online. In order to establish credibility with a client, a psychic will try to tell them things about themselves and any information such as your name and phone number could be used to conduct a background check especially if the consultation is done over the phone.

⊗ Do a google search for negative reviews and scam reports about that psychic.

⊗ Make sure to read any fine print and legal disclaimers to spot hidden terms and conditions for their services.

⊗ Do not respond to unsolicited consultation offers sent from strange email addresses.

⊗ Only choose psychics with a money back satisfaction guarantee.

⊗ Never enter credit card information on the internet except on authorized sites with secure payment servers.

Short horror story about a mad scientist

    Published by:

    A. James Harris-Dodder

In most cases, much research is needed to understand that which we cannot explain. Years of study and long nights compiling information are a given. Luckily, that is not the case in this story. Parasites need no introduction to mankind. We drain the earth’s supply of life, just to maintain our exsistence. It was only a matter of time before it fought back with something no one could restrain.

It’s necessary that I get to the point, as I may not be around much longer to document my findings. My name is doctor Carlive Greene, biologist, botanist, and master surgeon. I’ve become, through the years, am esteemed heart and brain surgeon, as well as having a knack for discovering new flora. I’ve traveled to South America, most of Europe, and the more civilized parts of Africa.

This study began after my discovery of a new member of the Cuscuta, also known as Dodder, family. It’s a parasitic plant that attaches itself to the vascular system of others to feed. All previous members of the genus posed no threat to mammals, or any other “living” organism. All of that changed when I stumbled upon a new addition to the family. Villagers in a fairly civilized, rural African town were shocked beyond reason when their livestock began to die suddenly. I was asked to assess the situation, and my studies concluded that an unknown type of vine had become carnivorous and attack the animals.

At first the locals, along with my colleagues, thought me mad for even suggesting such a preposterous idea. It took months of horribly irritating trips back and forth, with countless skeptical scientists, for them to realize I was right. I was asked to bring a specimen back to my laboratory to study, and that is where this experiment began. Through numerous tests, I discovered the cause of the plant’s sudden transformation. It’s environment severely changed when the natives began harvesting wood. One fateful day, one of the men working accidently caused a fire to spark, killing off the majority of the plant life. As the workers began the clean up process, many of them were injured due to their lack of modern technology. When their injuries occurred, their blood naturally fell to the ground, which is where the vine was introduced to it. Since this was the only source of nutrition it could find, it gradually evolved the ability to actively seek out other sources of blood.

As my studies continued, it became increasingly apparent to me that I must cancel all of my other work. I became obsessed with this new oddity, studying it’s every action. I spent the majority of my funding purchasing animals for it to feed on. After a few months, my funds had run out, but I knew my studies had to continue. I began searching for new sources of blood for the plant.

I knew a friend who owned a blood bank, him owning the one key to the facilities. I brought him to dinner, waiting patiently for him to use the restroom, before I drugged his drink. When he fell asleep in his car, I stole the key and raided the bank. This kept my specimen satisfied for quite awhile, but also forced me into seclusion. I was a wanted man, and I could not risk losing all I’d worked for.

I was able to take a couple pints of blood from myself everyday for awhile, but it was obvious that this would not last. I began searching through adds online for people interested in casual sex. Since my lab was at least an hour away from any city, most people saw this as a great way to not get caught. I prepared three rooms specifically designed to hold them in. After weeks of careful planning, everything was ready. All three individuals were convinced they were attending an orgy, and I took extra steps to make sure my guests never suspected a thing once they arrived. I had two call girls to keep the charade going when they entered the lab.

All they saw were fine curtains, expensive furniture, and priceless art, all being counterfeit versions I had ordered. As they made small talk with the girls, I released gas into the room, causing them to lose consciousness. I drug the girls off first, burying them in the dirt around the vines. It didn’t take long for them to be fully drained. After this, I brought each person to their respective room. My group consisted of very specifically chosen subjects: a husky American male, a lanky Asian male, and a female body builder from Kenya. Our first subject, the American male, died of a massive heart attack not long after waking. Once he fell lifelessly upon the ground, the Dodder attacked. It began to feed, but very quickly shriveled and died.

Our next subject was the small framed Asian man. He fought hard to get out, which roused the plant, causing it to lunge towards him. After an hour had passed, all traces of the man had vanished, and the plant went back to resting. Which brings us to our final subject, the Kenyan woman. She managed to severely damage the glass through which I was observing. In doing so, she violently swung her arm upwards, smashing out the light fixture. I was unable to see anything for several minutes, only hearing screaming and rustling sounds. Once I was able to find a flashlight, I moved slowly towards the examining room. As I began to open the door, something rammed it, forcefully swinging it completely off the hinges. I scrambled backwards, frantically trying to regain my footing. As I did so, a vine twice the size of all of the others lunged towards me. I jumped far enough back to avoid it, and locked myself in the closest empty room.

As I write this, I am still in that very room. Since I began writing this down, the vine has managed to shake all but one hinge from the door. I must hurry my conclusion, for soon I will be with all the rest who fell victim to this monstrosity. I have concluded, after all above stated tests and findings, that our species no longer reigns supreme. In a very short time, all of you will be in a room similar to this one, awaiting your demise, Live while you can, because man is no longer the dominant parasite. We have become the dominant prey.

5 Super Short Stories To Creep You Out

    Published by:

    My New Doggie!

    by Ratfink333

I went to the animal shelter a couple weeks ago and adopted a beautiful young golden retriever. He’s the smartest dog I’ve ever met. Within days, he knew “sit,” “stay,” and “roll over.” I even taught him the old trick where you make a gun with your hand and say “bang,” and he rolls onto his back and plays dead. The problem is, dogs are much better with hand signals than voice cues, so now, as soon as I make a finger gun, he rolls over onto his back and eagerly looks at me for his treat.

I’m sitting on the couch watching a movie in the dark and my puppy is on the hardwood floor in front of me, chewing on his new toy. He looks up towards me, pauses, then rolls onto his back, his tongue out and begging for a treat. I realize he’s looking over my head, beyond the couch. The floor behind me creaks.

    Mister Nobody

    By IPostAtMidnight

Everyone knew Cassie. She was a friendly child, sure, but I think the neighborhood knew her because she knew us. She was the reason our block felt like a family.

“Girl’s got second sight,” Alletta Johnson would proclaim from her window perch.

I’ve never believed in such things, but I’ll admit Cassie had a gift. To her, Alletta Johnson was “Miss Grandma,” while the girl who drove the ice cream truck was “Miss Dog Doctor.” Our mailman was “Mister Painter.” She played hopscotch and jump-rope with kids she’d dubbed “Singer,” “Teacher,” and “Fireman.”

I asked her about all the nicknames once, and from what I could understand they came from how she saw people—as potential. She didn’t exactly see our futures, she just saw us at our ideal.

“Everybody glows, Mister Writer,” she told me. “Everybody’s good.”

I’d never told anyone I wanted to write. It was a secret dream, not one I’d let myself take seriously. Yet somehow, she saw it in me. That’s how she saw all of us.

One afternoon I was cooling off on my front stoop when she skipped down the sidewalk with a stranger at her side. She had obviously enchanted him, just like everyone else. We smiled and waved, and as they passed I asked, “Who’s your friend, Cassie?”

She paused, tilting her head in confusion before exclaiming, “Oh! You’re being writery, Mister Writer!”

I should’ve paid more attention as she laughed and twirled off down the street, followed by the stranger. I should’ve realized.

Cassie always saw the good in people.

Cassie could only see the good in people.

    But not everybody is good.

What they don’t tell you about the dead

    by Crimsai

I don’t want to sound mean, but the dead are pretty clueless. I’ve always seen them. When I was younger everyone thought I was just talking to imaginary friends. After a couple years, when I overheard my parents talk about calling a psychologist, I realised what I was talking to. See, ghosts don’t tend to realise they’re dead, and they don’t look like in the movies, they look just like us.

I’m pretty smart for a 13 year old, so I started noticing certain patterns to tell them apart from the living. They could be a bit distant from living people, or you’d see them try to talk to people who wouldn’t even notice them. Some of them could tell I was different, that I noticed them. Like this guy I saw after school yesterday. I’m a big boy now, see, I don’t need my parents to pick me up, home is just a short walk away. He was standing away from the other parents, didn’t talk to them, just stared at me, that’s how I knew he was one of the ghosts. I went over, told him I knew what he was and asked how I could help him. I don’t remember much after that, I think because of what happened this morning.

Downstairs, my parents were crying. I tried talking to them but they ignored me. They must have died last night somehow, sometimes the new ghosts wouldn’t talk to me. Some police officers and reporters just arrived, they won’t talk to me either, just my parents. It’s weird, I’ve never seen so many ghosts together before. Why won’t anyone talk to me?

    Behind Closed Doors

    by Lillpi

The neighbor was a weird man, he was reclusive and never really spoke to anyone. Tom liked to scare me by saying he must be a murderer, that he always kept to himself so people wouldn’t catch on. I didn’t like the jokes and would tell him off, the neighbor was probably just shy. Although I got mad at the jokes I had to admit, the neighbor did make me uncomfortable. Tom worked a mix of day and night shifts, tonight happened to be one of his night shifts, I don’t like the idea of being home alone at night, everything seems more sinister but I tend to shake these feelings by watching some TV and going to bed.

I was jolted awake by a loud noise, maybe Tom had come home? I looked at my clock and saw it was 2:30 in the morning. Panic rose, my mind was racing and I didn’t know what to think, there was only two facts that kept repeating in my mind; Tom didn’t finish work till 6 and that noise came from inside the house. I quickly looked out the second storey bedroom window to the drive way below in case he did come back early, his car wasn’t there but what I saw made my blood run cold, it was my neighbor breaking into my house. I grabbed my phone and called the police. I waited in my room, too scared to go downstairs and prayed the police would come in time. They did, they caught him.

I was still in my bedroom, watching from my window as they took him to the car, he was struggling and screaming, he really was a mad man. “You don’t understand!” He yelled ” I saw someone else go in the house!” as my brain was processing his meaning I heard my bedroom door shut behind me.

    The President is Human

    by OsoBrazos

Philip started the video clip as soon as Rose closed the door to the editing bay. Charlie Clark, the newly elected President’s head speech writer moved on screen. He was familiar to the small group in the sound-proof room; he had worked at their news station for three years before taking his current position in November of 2016. He was dressed nicely and spoke eloquently enough, but his hands betrayed his nerves. He kept running fingers through his hair, straightening his tie, and sipping water.

“…and, unlike the President, I can say whatever I want,” Charlie quipped onscreen to the laughter of the assembled journalists. “But seriously, the goal of a speech writer is not to tell the President how he feels – we are not in danger of running the world accidentally – it’s to put the President’s feelings, the feelings he was elected to have, into the perfect words.

“Say the President is fuming over a human rights violation. The President is human, he’s allowed to be angry. In fact, he’s so angry his commendable diction slips. It’s my job to craft a statement that encapsulates the President’s anger – is the verbal embodiment of his sense of injustice – so he can deliver that to the world.”

Philip stopped the video and spoke. “As the Secret Service led us away from this conference, one of them pressed a paper into my hand. It was a code Charlie and I used as war correspondents in Afghanistan. It says the phrases made when he touched his tie were false.”

Philip played those segments. “I can say whatever I want.” “We are not in danger.” “The President is human.”

10 Killers Who Didn’t Eat Meat

    Published by:

    “Murder” by Spirit-of-Dusk via deviantart

Many murderers are reviled for their depravity and brutality. Such individuals are often incapable of feeling compassion or empathy for their victims and so then it may seem paradoxical that some killers would be opposed to the consumption of meat. Whether for ethical or health reasons these 10 killers abstained from eating dead animals yet had no reservations about slaughtering humans.

    10. William MacDonald

    http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/queensland/the-mutilator-dead-at-90-william-macdonald-who-cut-off-victims-genitalia-was-nsws-longestserving-prisoner/news-story/79932bce3773f5f8e2d5dd091c4163d5

    via couriermail.com

MacDonald was a vegetarian who loved classical music and is credited as Australia’s first true serial killer. During the 1960s he terrorized the city of Sydney and was dubbed the “Sydney Mutilator” drawing comparisons to Jack the Ripper due to the gruesome manner in which he killed his victims. He targeted riffraffs and wastrels who he would lure with alcohol and then subsequently slaughtered them. He murdered and mutilated 4 men with a hunting knife, taking one victim’s genitals home in a paper bag before throwing them off the Harbor Bridge. He was eventually caught, convicted and sentenced to life. It was later found that MacDonald was raped by a corporal while he was in the military and as a teen had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He became eligible for release from jail but declined. He expressed no desire to leave, saying he “wouldn’t last five minutes”

    9. Volkert Van der Graaf

    Volkert Van der Graaf

    via de telegraaf

Van der Graaf was a Dutch vegan animal rights campaigner who in May 2002, assassinated anti-immigration politician Pim Fortuyn as he was heading for his car. Van der Graaf was a passionate activist who fought against factory farming and worked with the Environment Offensive, a group aimed at “stopping the expansion of factory farming”. As a teen he said his parents would not let him give up meat, but he later became a vegan. His alleged reason for killing Fortuyn was to stop him from exploiting Muslims as “scapegoats”. He viewed Fortuyn as a threat to those groups, comparing his rise to that of Nazism in Germany in the 1930s. At his trial, relatives of the slain politician appeared in court wearing fur coats as a show of spite against Van der Graaf.

    8. Adolf Hitler

    http://www.trend-chaser.com/politics/hitlers-skull-actually-unknown-womans-9-other-weird-facts-about-the-fuhrer/2/

    via trendchaser.com

Under Hitler’s reign, millions of people were killed and if some reports are to be believed, the Nazi regime was an institution with paradoxical ethics. On the one hand were the horrors of Auschiwitz where cruel and inhumane experiments were conducted on Jewish prisoners  by evil scientists such as the infamous Josef Mengele. On the other hand was the irony of Nazi animal rights advocacy. Adolf Hitler himself is alleged to have been a vegetarian (albeit not a strict one) with a fondness for animals particularly that of ravens, wolves and dogs. It has been reported that he believed meat-consumption was a factor in societal decline. In his 1938 autobiography, Mein Kampf, he recounts how, even when food was scarce, he would share his paltry rations with mice. When the Nazi Party came to power in 1933, they instituted numerous animal protection laws. People could be jailed for mistreating animals which included such acts as docking the ears and tails of dogs without anesthesia, and invasive animal research. The Nazis apparently had compassion even for the suffering of lobsters in restaurants.

    7. Lynette Fromme

    lynette fromme

    via http://murdersofaugust69.freeforums.net/

Lynette Fromme was a would be assassin and member of the infamous “Manson Family” cult. Although she did not succeed, in 1975 Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme was dead set on assassinating then president Gerald Ford. She pulled out a colt .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol during an event in Sacramento at which the president appeared but she was quickly subdued by intervening Secret Service agents. She was convicted and sentenced to life for her assassination attempt but was released on parole in 2009. Audio tapes of her pretrial psychiatric examination have been released that reveal her to be a herbivore among other things. When asked about her diet she replied, “Vegetables, yeah, I’m a vegetarian. I try and avoid additives, sugar; I ordinarily don’t eat any sugar, starch.”

    6. Scott Dyleski

    via nbcbayarea.com

In October 2005, Scott Dyleski murdered his neighbor Pamela Vitale who was the wife of prominent lawyer Daniel Horowitz. Dyleski was only 16 years old when he bludgeoned Vitale to death in her home while she was surfing the web. During his trial he was impassive and un-emotive making no admission of guilt nor any disclosure of details of his motives. He was convicted of first degree murder and was served the max sentence of life without parole being ineligible for the death penalty on account of his age. In spite of his cold demeanor, witnesses at his trial, stated that Dyleski was a gentle vegan kid who also had a fascination with Goth music and serial killers.

    5. Chandrakant Jha

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/indiahome/indianews/article-2280753/Serial-killer-Chandrakant-Jha-profile.html

    via dailymail.co.uk

In India during the late 90s, Chandrakant Jha would house young men in his home only to murder them often under petty pretenses such as lying or being non-vegetarian. He would reportedly pamper them like his own children and then kill them at the slightest provocation. Jha would scatter his victims mutilated limbs throughout Delhi which he did to taunt police officials. He was caught in 1998 and served time behind bars only to be released in 2002 for lack of evidence. He continued to kill 6 others before he was caught again. He reportedly had a  “death ritual” where around 8pm he would tie his victim’s hands on the pretext of punishing him and then strangle them using a nunchaku. Jha was eventually captured and sent to the gallows for his crimes.

    4. Sheila Graham-Trott

    http://abcnews.go.com/US/mayors-wife-faces-trial-florida-love-triangle-slaying/story?id=25372739

    via abcnews.go

Sheila Graham-Trott  was found guilty of first degree murder in the 2010 killing of Kelly Brennan, her former friend and estranged husband’s lover. 24 hours after going missing, Kelly Brennan’s body was found dumped in the bushes with signs of head trauma consistent with a hammer. Officials were led to her body after Sheila made a bizarre 911 call reporting she was seeing ‘visions’ of her friend’s face in the dark. The odd claim was enough to convince prosecutors that Sheila Graham-Trott was culpable. Perhaps as an attempt to convey the gentleness of her daughter, Graham-Trott’s mother expressed that Sheila has been a vegetarian since ninth grade because her bus stop was near an abattoir.

    3. Sonia Jacobs

    via thesunnycenter.com

Sonia Jacobs was a 28-year-old ‘vegetarian hippie’ when she was arrested along with her husband and a 3rd man following a 1976 shootout in which two policemen were killed. Jacobs and her husband Jesse Tafero were passengers in a car driven by Walter Rhodes when the incident occurred. The 3 were convicted in the murders and spent 15 years on death row before the driver made a confession following the execution of Jesse Tafero in 1990. Rhodes made an admission that exculpated Jacobs of guilt and she was released in 1992. She reunited with her son and daughter and later remarried to an Irishman who was also released from prison under similar circumstances.

    2. John Linley Frazier

    via alchetron.com

John Linley Frazier was a mass murderer dubbed “the killer prophet”. In 1970 he murdered ophthalmologist Victor Ohta, his wife, two sons and a secretary and subsequently burned down the house they were in while he in a drug-induced psychosis. Frazier was vegetarian hippie who collected guns and did drugs and it is believed his use of LSD contributed to the string of erratic behavior leading up to the murders. He claimed to hear voices that compelled him to act as an agent of god. He was convicted and sentenced to death by lethal gas but the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.

    1. Adam Lanza

    http://www.businessinsider.com/who-was-adam-lanza-the-sandy-hook-shooter-2012-12

    via businessinsider.com

In December 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 children at the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton, Connecticut. He also murdered 6 adult staff members as well as his mother before committing suicide. He is said to have been fascinated with chimpanzees because of their capacity for empathy, but could show little or none himself. Adam reportedly had mental disorders including obsessive-compulsive behaviors such as changing his socks 20 times a day and using tissues to open doors for fear of touching knobs with his bare hands. Witnesses have reported that Adam was a vegan who drank water “with a certain amount of salt added to it.” He reportedly had no friends or associates and never used drugs or alcohol. He would write stories and poems that would at turns terrify and move his listeners to tears. In an email to investigators, an unnamed witness disclosed that “Emotion wasn’t something expressed in particularly verbose or grandiose fashion but it was expressed. He was capable of laughing, smiling and making jokes though always in a dry fashion.”

7 Of The Most Expensive Insurance Payouts Ever

    Published by:

[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ccidents happen, and they often come at a hefty cost. Hurricanes, car accidents, slip and falls… all of these can result in extensive and expensive damage which is why it is important to have insurance coverage to help foot the bill. Some insurance payouts are staggering in their magnitude so here is a list of other disasters that cost insurance companies dearly.

    #7. Lucky Bean

    alg-car-rowan-atkinson-jpg

Rowan Atkinson is an English actor best known for his comical role as Mr. Bean. In the U.K., Atkinson set a record for the largest insurance claim ever recorded after crashing his McLaren F1 automobile . In August 2011, the actor lost control while driving on an icy English road near Peterborough. Luckily, Atkinson walked away with only minor injuries but his 240 mph supercar spent more than a year under repair. The accident cost his auto insurance for a hefty £900,000 which equates to roughly $957,780 USD. The amount exceeded the previous U.K. insurance claim record by nearly 3 times. Since then, Atkinson’s auto insurances quotes will likely be sky high.

#6. He Broke A Leg, now He’s Set For Life

    fallonice-738120

In Virginia, a claimant slipped on ice and skated away with millions. In 2012, a man sustained multiple broken bones after slipping in the walkway outside his apartment residence. Further complications stemming from both the injury and a preexisting condition threatened the amputation of his lower leg. In the end, a personal injury lawyer in Virginia was able to win the claimant a structured settlement of $7.75 million on account of the property owner’s lack of snow and ice maintenance as required by law. It’s a heavy price to pay, no bones about it.

    #5. Art Theft

    william_turner_-_shade_and_darkness_-_the_evening_of_the_deluge

In 1994, thieves stole three paintings from the Schirn Kunsthalle art gallery in Frankfurt, Germany. Two of the paintings were by artist, J.M.W Turner and had been loaned from the Tate gallery in London. These pieces were insured for $18 million each and the Tate museum received $36 million in compensation in exchange for the ownership rights to the paintings. The paintings were later recovered, and the museum bought back the ownership rights.

While you may not own a priceless work of art or antique, your personal belongings still have value.  Homeowners and renters insurance policies include a provision for protecting your possessions. You will receive a payout if the items are lost, stolen, or destroyed during a natural disaster. The amount of personal belongings coverage will vary depending upon the policy. Typically, homeowners insurance will cover an amount equal to half of the value of the home structure. Renters insurance coverage will vary. If you have an expensive piece of personal property, you may want to have a clause added to your policy for additional protection.

    #4. An Easy Target

    14930488856_7c34d6a55e_b

Cyber insurance is not something that most of us would necessarily need or think of needing. For businesses that store and manage data about their customers such as addresses and credit card numbers, cyber insurance or technology professional liability insurance is an imperative.

In early 2014, retail giant Target announced their data had been breached and the sensitive information of nearly 70 million customers had been stolen from their servers. The cyber theft cost the company $61 million and their insurance carrier was able to cover $44 million of those expenses. If you are concerned about someone stealing from you, then consider purchasing bond insurance. First-party bonds protect your business against employee theft. Third-party bonds will help to protect your clients’ possessions and theft by temporary employees.

    #3. Paul Walker

    11156679535_0b1e61fb52_b

When one of the lead actors dies during the production of a film, the consequences can be very costly. In November 2013, actor Paul Walker died in a fatal car crash just moments after leaving a charity event in Valencia, California. Filming for his latest movie ‘Furious 7’ was still unfinished at the time and Walker’s untimely death left studio execs with a delicate problem. Universal Pictures filed a claim for $50 million which is said to be unprecedented in the way of Hollywood insurance claims. This was to cover the expenses involved in editing, like CGI “face-replacement technology” and script revisions. It is not known if the studio has received payment for their claim as of early 2015.

    #2. 9/11 Tragedy

    911towers

September 11, 2001 will forever live in infamy not only for it’s death toll but for the magnitude of money it cost in damages. The lives of nearly 3,000 people ended in the wake of this senseless tragedy and it is regarded as the most expensive incident in insurance history. The total cost reached a towering sum of $40 billion which was payed out for losses including business interruption, vehicle and property damage, life insurance, liability insurance, aviation liability and workers compensation. Congress created a $7 billion fund to compensate 5,562 family members of the fallen. Payments went to widows and widowers, children and parents.

    #1. Hurricane Katrina

    noaa-hurricane-katrina-aug28-05-1445utc

In 2005, the Gulf of Mexico was hit by a devastating hurricane trifecta in which more than 4,000 people perished. In the devastating aftermath following Katrina, Rita and Wilma, New Orleans was flooded and the combined damages left behind amounted to approximately $130 billion in insurance claims covered under ‘an act of God’. The enormous estimate comes from the costs of damage to homes and businesses as a result of the storms, as well as compensation for personal injuries and fatalities during the hurricanes.

There are however, a select few among us to whom these revelations would not come as a surprise. Enlightened individuals who can see beyond the present, into the near or distant future. These are the seers, the prescient wielders of arcane knowledge known as forbidden arts.
