In the MBTI, there is no right or wrong pairing when it comes to matchmaking. However, it stands to reason that some types will get along more easily than others. Type differences can create certain challenges that may possibly be remedied or mitigated by fostering better understanding and awareness of each person’s needs in the relationship. Understanding the dynamics at play between two personality types can lead to healthier relations even when conflicts arise.
When it comes to INFJ relationships, as a personality type, they are found to be most compatible with the Idealists types (INFJ, INFP, ENFP and ENFJ) and the Rational types (INTP, INTJ, ENTP and ENTJ). Here, we will look at INFJ’s relationship compatibility with each Rational type. MBTI analyst, David Keirsey referred to Rational partners as “mindmates”. He believed that INFJs and Rationals enjoy better communication and understanding on account of their mutual intuition preference. Keirsey asserted that a shared perceiving preference was a key factor in how easily a pair of personalities are likely to get along. Individuals vary however, and those differences should not be discounted as they can often defy generalizations about type.
INFJ and INTP:
These two get along rather easily. They enjoy a common interest in ideas and concepts and a mutual lack of interest in going out all the time or following all the conventional rituals of a romantic relationship. Both types are quite loyal and conscientious. Neither type has a desire to control the other, and there is an implicit respect for one another’s space. As an introverted couple, the simple act of quietly sharing the same space is enjoyable to them. INFJs and INTPs both utilize Ti and Fe, which allows them to find common ground in many areas. Any misunderstandings and conflicts between them can typically be ironed out in a rather sympathetic manner.
INTPs are very flexible and low maintenance partners. They however, will rarely if ever discuss their feelings in any direct way. INFJs can often sense when something is wrong with their partner, but may have a hard time getting an INTP to open up about it. Additionally, INTPs may not be as demonstrative of their affections as INFJ would like. INTPs can be oblivious as to how satisfied or happy their partner is. INFJ will have to let INTP know what they want or need from them emotionally because INTPs are often blissfully unaware. On the other hand, INFJs can appreciate that INTP is often very receptive and willing to accommodate their wishes. INTPs seek to understand rather than judge and that is something that can often be enough to resolve most issues.
INFJ and ENTP:
These two can get along well and the dynamic can be particularly exciting. David Keirsey believed that ENTP was the best match for INFJ because of how different they are while sharing an intuition preference. ENTPs can offer a bit more engagement and amusing conversation that INFJs can appreciate. INFJ may find that they have to tend to a lot of the more practical matters and responsibilities that ENTPs may neglect or not do well enough to INFJ’s satisfaction. INFJs can bring a degree of organization and stability to their ENTP partner’s world. ENTP on the other hand can bring a lot of variety and spontaneity that can sometimes draw INFJ out of their more quiet and careful existence. ENTPs can be fun but can also get on INFJ’s nerves.
Because they enjoy a higher degree of socialness, ENTPs may directly or indirectly subject their INFJ partners to more people interactions than they would prefer. ENTP’s friends may become frequent guests at their home which could be bothersome for INFJ. Especially if they feel that it is taking away quality time that could be spent alone together as a couple. On the other hand, INFJs may enjoy some degree of entertaining and playing host to the guests that either they or their partner invites over. INFJs can appreciate how easy it is to talk to ENTP. ENTPs can typically do enough talking for the both of them and INFJs will just be there for the show. ENTPs like having an empathetic partner who can understand and indulge them and their chaotic tendencies.
INFJ and INTJ:
These two are very similar in temperament and can make for a very solid team balancing out each other’s Thinking and feeling preferences. However, they can sometimes step on each other’s toes when they have opposing ideas about how things should be done. A key distinction between INFJ and INTJ could be summed up in this way: If INFJ and INTJ were both commanding officers aboard a ship that was torpedoed, the INFJ would be more focused on the welfare of the crew and the INTJ would be more focused on controlling the damage to the ship. INFJs can bring more warmth and attention to the relationship which is something that INTJ can appreciate, but INTJs tend to have a blind spot about the feeling-based needs of their partner. INTJs may not display a great deal of empathetic understanding and support and may not even show much of their emotional reactions at all which can make them harder for INFJ to read than usual.
On the other hand, INTJs can provide a sense of emotional strength and stability when INFJ feels insecure. INTJs can sometimes be at a loss when it comes to resolving emotional matters that INFJ is going through. What they offer is loyalty, maturity and honesty about whatever they are thinking. INFJs can count on INTJ to give it to them straight because INFJ for their part, can sometimes be hamstrung by their reluctance to give offense or hurt people’s feelings. Additionally, INTJs can be excellent providers in the relationship and take the lead in most decisions as long as INFJ is okay with that. Aside from that, INTJs and INFJs speak a common language that is laced with metaphor and abstract ideas. A lot of quiet, quality time may be spent getting into deep meaningful discussions with each other.
INFJ and ENTJ:
Finally, this pairing can be tricky but also very rewarding so long as INFJ and ENTJ have a clear understanding for each other’s needs and expectations. This pairing can be strong because both types share a strong need for direction in their lives. They both want to feel their life is going somewhere meaningful and for INFJ, ENTJ can be an excellent partner to go on that journey with. ENTJs, by virtue of their capacity for making things happen, can really support the INFJ in fulfilling their dreams and aspirations. As a romantic team, INFJ can represent the heart and soul of the relationship while ENTJ represents the brains and muscle. Empathy can be a blind spot for the ENTJ due to their inferior introverted feeling. They barely want to dwell on their own feelings let alone put themselves in other people’s emotions. INFJ can help ENTJ understand themselves and other people better.
INFJ may sometimes clash with ENTJ due to some strong differences in perspective. INFJs may need to do some work to help ENTJs to be more considerate of their needs and desire for harmony. INFJs can sometimes feel hurt or attacked by the blunt remarks and criticisms from the ENTJ. Furthermore, INFJs may have a tendency to bottle up how they feel and become resentful. It is important for INFJs to express their needs without getting too emotional or fault finding. ENTJs are more action-oriented but they can understand and respect INFJ’s boundaries once they have been made clear. INFJs have their own interests and they need time to themselves. They can’t always bend over backwards just to fit into ENTJ’s agenda. Both types have a strong focus on the future and if they can keep their vision aligned with one another, their relationships prospects will look bright.
