With America’s new POTUS set to take office, the country braces for the next chapter of its leadership. To mark the occasion, we want to rank-order the presidents by zodiac sign. Here, we will show what signs are least common and most common and also some of the common threads among presidents of each sign. From the charismatic Leos who commanded the spotlight to the pragmatic Capricorns who toiled through tumultuous times, the zodiac offers a fascinating lens through which to explore leadership styles and legacies.
#5. Aries & Virgo
Virgo: William Howard Taft, Lyndon B. Johnson
Aries: Thomas Jefferson, John Tyler
Only 2 U.S. presidents were born under the signs of Virgo and Aries making these the least common zodiacs on this list. As an Aries, Jefferson was very much a pioneer who helped found the country and spearheaded its expansion through the Louisiana Purchase. Virgoan Taft was the only president to later serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Johnson’s tenure was marked by his tireless efforts to enact sweeping domestic reforms, such as the landmark Great Society programs. Much like a Virgo, his concern for people’s health and their ability to escape poverty was evident in the Medicare, Medicaid and job skill training programs he implemented while president.
#4. Gemini & Sagittarius
Gemini: John F. Kennedy, George H. W. Bush, Donald J. Trump
Sagittarius: Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, Franklin Pierce
Tied in 4th place, Gemini and Sagittarius each constitute 3 of America’s Commanders-in-Chief. The three Gemini presidents—John F. Kennedy, George H. W. Bush, and Donald Trump—share notable parallels that reflect their zodiac sign’s traits of communication, adaptability, and duality. All leveraged strong communication skills, with Kennedy’s eloquent speeches, Bush’s diplomatic coalition-building, and Trump’s direct media engagement, trade deals and willingness to reach out, meet and establish diplomatic relations with countries often vilified such as North Korea and Russia. Their charisma and public personas further highlight Gemini’s influence on their leadership styles.
The Sagittarian presidents headed administrations marked by expansionist aspirations but also tensions over moral questions surrounding state rights and slavery. Constructive ambitions such Pierce’s transcontinental railroad, were hampered by political opposition over the slave status of the territories he sought to acquire for this plan. With the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, he was able to get what he wanted by allowing those territories to decide for themselves on whether to ban slavery or not. However, this decision effectively repealed the provisions of the Missouri Act of 1820 and sowed divisions that ultimately led to the American Civil War.
#3. Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn & Pisces
Taurus: James Buchanan, Ulysses S. Grant, Harry S. Truman, James Monroe
Cancer: John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, Gerald Ford, George W. Bush
Leo: Benjamin Harrison, Herbert Hoover, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama
Libra: Rutherford B. Hayes, Chester A. Arthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter
Capricorn: Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, Richard Nixon
Pisces: George Washington, James Madison, Andrew Jackson, Grover Cleveland
Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn and Pisces share the number 3 spot accounting for 4 presidents each. The Taurus leaders stand out for their efforts to stabilize and unite the nation. Although Truman made the difficult decision to use the atom bomb against Japan, it saved many American lives and brought a swift end against a vicious enemy who refused to surrender.
Among the Cancerian presidents, national security and succession were a common thread. Bush and Adams were both sons of former presidents and Ford and Coolidge were both Vice presidents who ascended to the presidency via the 25th Amendment. The Leo presidents shared a flair for public relations, not shying away from opportunities to engage the media and make bold speeches. The Librans displayed a focus on human rights issues, diplomacy, reforms, fairness and compromises across various institutions.
Capricorn U.S. presidents—Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Woodrow Wilson, and Richard Nixon—share traits often associated with their zodiac sign, such as discipline, ambition, and pragmatism. However, their legacies are mixed. Fillmore enforced the Fugitive Slave Act, Johnson faced impeachment during Reconstruction, Wilson’s policies reflected racism despite his leadership during WWI, and Nixon resigned after Watergate. These leaders often displayed resilience but faced significant controversies, reflecting Capricorn’s drive for achievement alongside challenges in public perception.
Pisces presidents displayed vision, emotional depth, and adaptability. Washington demonstrated leadership in founding the nation; Madison played a key role in drafting the Constitution; Jackson was known for his populism and decisive actions; and Cleveland emphasized integrity in governance. Despite their achievements, some faced challenges balancing idealism with practical governance, reflecting Pisces’ duality of intuition and complexity.
#2. Aquarius
Aquarius: William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, William McKinley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan
The 2nd most popular zodiac sign among U.S. presidents is Aquarius. Common traits associated with Aquarius—vision, innovation, and independence—are reflected in the leadership styles of these historical figures. Lincoln and FDR are celebrated for transformative leadership during crises (Civil War and Great Depression/WWII), while Reagan emphasized optimism and communication. However, a striking pattern is that four of the five died in office, highlighting the intense challenges they faced. All but Harrison were re-elected, showcasing their popularity and impact.
#1. Scorpio
Scorpio: John Adams, James K. Polk, James A. Garfield, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Joe Biden
With a total of six U.S. presidents born under this sign, Scorpio is the most common zodiac sign among those who have served as Commander-in-Chief. Scorpio U.S. presidents—John Adams, James K. Polk, James A. Garfield, Theodore Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, and Joe Biden—share traits often linked to Scorpio, such as passion, resilience, and intensity. Many displayed transformative leadership: Roosevelt’s progressive reforms and Biden’s focus on unity stand out. However, challenges are notable—Garfield and Harding died in office, with Harding’s term marred by scandals. Scorpios are known for their fearless determination and ability to navigate crises, which aligns with the impactful yet complex legacies of these leaders.
